Egg Freezing in London
In the last ten years, egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) has come of age. Within the last five years during this period, the embryologists have improved on the preservation of eggs compared to methods used previously. This has improved the likelihood of eggs surviving and resulting in embryos and pregnancy.
It is well known that the quality of eggs depreciates as women age. Eggs in the ovary are created before females are born, and the number of eggs reduces right from birth and onwards, as well as the quality of eggs.
How it works
Women may choose to delay having a child for any reason. But with egg freezing on offer, they now have a real choice of not compromising on their fertility.
Women may choose to delay having a child for any reason and with options such as egg freezing on offer, women now have a real choice of not compromising on their fertility. Women can now freeze their eggs around the age of 30 and then take their time deciding on when to have a child. It means that should there be a problem in conceiving naturally, later on, women are assured that eggs they froze when they were around 30 years of age are still waiting without ageing. Women can wait a few years or even more.
Eggs frozen at a young age will preserve their quality and the risk of having abnormalities such as Down’s syndrome (and other abnormalities) using frozen eggs will be that of the age of freezing.
How long does it take?
The treatment is less than 2 weeks resulting in very little downtime with the maximum time off work being 2 days.
There are several stages to the Egg Freezing treatment. All consultations and scans during the treatment can be done at your local “Fertility in Community” clinic. However the Egg Collection and actual freezing of eggs are “regulated” activities, and will be performed at the primary HFEA licensed centre: IVF London (HFEA centre number 0365).
How much does it cost?
Typically, the cost of this treatment ranges between £3000 to £4000 excluding medicines and more. At Fertility in Community, we freeze eggs at the price of £2200 excluding the cost of medicines, which varied due to the patient’s age and fertility reserve.
The annual storage charge will be discussed during the consultation before signing up for the treatment.
